Medical bills for a Minnesota couple stuck in Costa Rica after an ATV crash are mounting as the family struggles to get the pair back to the states, where their health insurance is valid. Meanwhile, their struggle has also highlighted how helpful travel insurance can be.
The family told FOX 9 News that the hospital where Elissa and Ron Marritt are currently receiving care has told them they must pay $ 20,000 in the next two days. While hindsight is always 20-20, their sudden struggle shows just how much travel insurance can help.
“Bit of advice I could give to anyone out there: Always make sure you have travel insurance,” Ron Merrit told FOX 9 News via telephone.
Elissa Marrit was cut off by a motorcycle while she was close to the road’s edge, and she fell 75 feet down a gorge. Now, she has multiple broken bones and a heart beat that fluctuates so much, doctors don’t feel it’s safe for her to fly on a commercial plane. So far, his insurance has been useless in the country and he’s had to pay for everything on the spot.
